Abstract

The growth of the Muslim population in Spain, as in the rest of the West, implies challenges. The main challenge is total integration, which is usually approached only from a legal point of view, forgetting its relationship with the idea of the Spanish nation. This double article covers the history of the first Muslims who settled in the Spanish nation-state, their goal is not only to tell their story, but also how their presence influenced the stories about what the nation is. Its four parts (The Mercenaries, The Missionaries, The Students, The Converts) by extension, are published in two installments, as independent articles
