In this paper, different strategies are proposed for effective learning and teaching of radioactivity. This topic is a central part of the physics curriculum in high school. The abstract nature of the radioactivity phenomenon, the mathematical formalism required for its description, and its influence in the society have been taken into account in the design of the activities. Special emphasis has been put on the use of everyday materials since these are easily accessible and allow students see the connection between science and the real world.
