Author Guidelines for Manuscript Submission

Text Format

Articles should follow the formatting used in the example document at the following link: article format. Texts must comply with the same page setting as this model (go to “Page Layout” > “Page Setup”, and use the settings on the “Margins”, “Paper” and “Layout” tabs in the article being submitted).

Also, the different sections in the article (title, body text, titles of paragraphs, indented citations, footnotes, final references, headings and page numbers) must comply with the font type and size of the corresponding sections in the sample, as well as paragraph format, with the same tabulations (the “Format painter” tool may be helpful to copy the sample paragraph format and then apply it to the corresponding paragraph in the article).

Please use MS-Word for Windows, with font Times New Roman, 11-point font size.

Bold shall only be used for words indicating “Abstract”, “Keywords”, and their corresponding translation into English. Bold shall also be used for headings and their sequential numbering, small caps for the first level and lower case for the second.

Italics shall be used for the titles of books and journals, the names of works of art and words in other languages.

Abbreviations shall be avoided in the body text (except for “ca.”, “act.” or similar for dating in brackets).

The recommended length of the text is 20,000 to 50,000 characters (not counting spaces), including notes and appendices, but not the final references. Texts under 20,000 characters will not be considered.

To maintain anonymity during the peer-review, any references or citations disclosing the authors’ identities shall be avoided.

Appendices that are excessive, disproportionate or irrelevant to the study shall not be accepted.

FUNDING OF THE STUDY

In the event the study is part of a Project or has received public or private funding, include the title of the project, the funding institution and their identification code. These details shall be included in the first footnote.

NOTES

Notes in the text shall appear in consecutive Arabic numbers in superscript format; they shall be placed after the punctuation mark when they coincide.

The notes shall be inserted as footnotes, in font Times New Roman, 9-point font size. Aside from bibliographical references, they may include clarifications or relevant discussions.

LITERAL QUOTATIONS

Both literary and documentary transcriptions, as well as short literal quotations not exceeding three lines, shall be included in the text and placed between inverted commas (“ ”). When a quotation contains another one, the inverted commas in the internal quotation shall be angled (« »). If quotations are longer than three lines, they shall be placed in a separate indented paragraph; the inverted commas will not be used, the font size shall be 10 points and single spaced.

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES IN FOOTNOTES

Reference citations in footnotes shall follow this model: Author surname or surnames, year of publication of the cited work -in brackets- and page or pages, after colon.

Example:

  • Martí y Monsó (1901): 286-300.

In bibliographical references with more than one author, surnames shall be separated by a slash.

Example:

  • Angulo Íñiguez / Pérez Sánchez (1977):

When there are several bibliographical references in the same note, separate them with a semicolon (without repeating the surname if they are by the same author).

Examples:

  • Azcárate (1966): 111; García Gainza (2008): 87-93.
  • Martín González (1952): 462; (1990): 459-466.

If citing several works by the same author published in the same year, add lower case letters in alphabetical order after the date to differentiate them.

Example:

  • Serrera Contreras (1999a): 67-116; (1999b): 229-244.

Do not use other references such as ob. cit., op. cit., id., ibidem, supra, infra, or cfr.

DOCUMENTARY REFERENCES

Only include documentary references that are unpublished or that provide for a more complete review or reading. For those already published, cite the place where they appeared for the first time.

Identification and location of the citation must be complete. When the reference is provided for the first time, include the following information, in this order:

  • type of document (letter, contract, will, deed, etc.) and date(s).
  • complete identification of the Archive or document collection (with location, if necessary) and Archive Section.
  • detailed location of the document. If it is part of a volume (protocols, records, ledgers, etc.) complete identification of the same and its call number. If the pages are numbered, include the ones corresponding to the citation.

Example of first citation regarding collection and location of the document:

  • Archivo de la Real Chancillería de Valladolid, Pleitos Civiles, Ceballos Escalera (F), caja 391-7.

If the same document is cited again, whenever possible, use abbreviations for Archive, Section and call number, such as “bun.” (bundle), “vol.” (volume), “b.” (box), “f..” (file), etc., followed by “f.” / “ff.” (indicating “v” for back of folio) or “p.” / “pp.”.

Example of second citation:

  • ARCHV, P. C., Ceballos Escalera (F), c. 391-7.

A similar criterion shall be applied for a subsequent citation of the same document collection.

REFERENCES

The references cited in the footnotes shall be listed at the end of the article in full. The list shall be preceded by the heading References. No primary or documentary sources shall be included.

Works shall be sorted alphabetically by author surnames. Every entry shall start with a hanging indent. The different type of publication shall be described as follows:

Books:

For complete books, the abbreviated system used in the notes shall be expanded thus: Surname(s), First Name (year): Book title. Place of publication, Publisher.

Example:

  • Martí y Monsó, José (1901): Estudios histórico-artísticos relativos principalmente a Valladolid. Valladolid, Imprenta de Leonardo Miñón.

If the reference corresponds to a work made up of several volumes or tomes, this shall be noted after the title, with the abbreviations vol. for volume or t. for tome, followed by the volume or tome number; if it has a specific title, after the number, place a colon and then the title of the volume or tome in italics.

When there are several authors, the names shall be separated by a slash: Surname(s), First Name / Surname(s), First Name (year): Book title. Place of publication, Publisher. In the event of more than two authors, add et alii after the first one’s name and show no others.

Example:

  • Angulo Íñiguez, Diego / Pérez Sánchez, Alfonso E. (1977): A corpus of Spanish drawings, vol. 2: 1600-1650. London, Harvey Miller.

In the event of coordination, edition or scientific supervision of a book with several authors, or the curatorship of an exhibition, the corresponding abbreviations shall be included in brackets (coor., ed., dir., cur.) between the name of the author and the year of publication.

Example:

  • Ramírez, Juan Antonio (ed.) (2010): El sistema del Arte en España. Madrid, Cátedra.

A critical edition of a text by a previous author shall begin by mentioning this author; the identity of the publisher shall be placed after the title, separated by a comma and the first name before the surname.

Example:

  • Honnecourt, Villard de (1991): Cuaderno, siglo XIII, ed. Alain Erlande-Brandenburg. Madrid, Akal.

Book Chapters

Book chapters in works by multiple authors will be cited: Surname(s), First Name (year): “Chapter Title in Inverted Commas”, First Name and Surname(s) of editor, followed by abbreviations (coord.), (ed.) or (dir.): Book title. Place of publication, Publisher, pp.

Example:

Texts in congress proceedings, dictionary or encyclopedia entries and exhibition catalogue entries will be treated similarly, with the addition of the curator’s name (if any) followed by (cur.) in the latter.

Articles in Scientific Journals

Articles published in scientific journals will be cited: Surname(s), First Name (year): “Title of Article in Inverted Commas”, Journal Title, digits of volume/tome, pp. (first-last).

Example:

  • Gómez-Moreno, Manuel (1945): “El Arca Santa de Oviedo, documentada”, Archivo Español de Arte, 18, 125-136.

Documents on the Internet

“Title of the Document in Inverted Commas”, in http://www. [full URL] (date page was visited). If the author details and publication date are known, they shall be added as follows: Surname(s), First Name (year) preceding the citation.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO FACILITATE THE POSTING OF REFERENCES

When submitting an article, authors are invited to include in the “References” box a copy of the list of bibliographical works cited at the end of the article. To do this, authors can copy the list of references of the original document of the article and paste it into a text document (Word, etc.), treating the text in the following recommended way:

  • Each reference must be separated from the previous one with a blank line.
  • Each reference must be in a single line, without line feed. DO NOT use HTML tags <br>, <br/>, <br />, <p>.
  • Do not apply any style because when you paste the text in the field references it does not keep it. DO NOT use HTML tags (such as bold <b>, italic <i> or <em>, indexes , etc.).
  • Primary sources, archives, etc. shall not be included.
  • The names and surnames of the authors shall not be omitted if repeated in different appointments. They must be entered in each of the appointments.

Example:

  • Finally, the text must be pasted in the “References” box.

ILLUSTRATIONS

The article may be accompanied by a maximum of fourteen illustrations related to the text, which will be numbered consecutively. The minimum resolution of the photographs shall be 300 dpi, in JPEG or TIFF format, and its minor side shall be no shorter than 15 cm. If the photographs have not been taken by the author of the paper, their origin must be mentioned; in this case, the author shall be fully responsible for obtaining the relevant authorisation for their publication. The Editorial Board reserves the right to accept, select or group pictures based on their quality, number and relevance. No images shall be accepted if considered excessive in number or of scarce relevance to the study.

Reference to the pictures shall be included in the place of the text where the work or concept they illustrate is mentioned, and they shall be identified with the corresponding consecutive number within the article, preceded by the abbreviation “Fig.” and all in brackets. Example: (Fig. 1).

In no case pictures should be embedded in the MS-Word for Windows file containing the text of the article. They shall be sent one by one in separate files. Mock-up will be prepared by BSAA arte.

Pictures shall be accompanied by a caption indicating, in this order: Title of work in italics. Author. Date. Building/Museum/Institution/Collection where it is located. Town (Country, if applicable). A MS-Word for Windows file different from the one containing the text of the article shall be provided with a list of all captions.

AVAILABLE TEXT ON THE INTERNET AND / OR WITH DOI (DIGITAL OBJECT IDENTIFIER) OR HANDLE

In general, if any publication (book, edition, book chapter, article ...) is available on a web page (URL), and has no uniform resource identifiers (URI) such as DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or Handle (persistent identifier used by the repositories), the URL will be included at the end of the reference, Indicating the date of consultation. Example:

Yarza Luaces, Joaquín (2007), “Los sepulcros reales de la cartuja de Miraflores”, en VV.AA.: La cartuja de Miraflores I. Los sepulcros. Madrid, Fundación Iberdrola, pp. 15-73. Available at: https://www.fundacioniberdrolaespana.org/webfund/gc/prod/.../cartuja_sepulcros.pdf (visited on 9 November 2018).

If the publication has a uniform resource identifier, such as DOI or Handle, it will be included at the end of the reference, without including the URL or date of query, and without full stop at the end. Examples:

Collar de Cáceres, Fernando (2017), “Un Salvator Mundi del Maestro de Miraflores en Lagartera (Toledo)”, BSAA arte, 83, 31-46. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24197/bsaaa.83.2017.31-46

Bustamante García, Agustín (2002), “Estatuas clásicas: apuntes sobre gusto y coleccionismo en la España del siglo XVI”, Anuario del Departamento de Historia y Teoría del Arte, 14, 117-135. Handle: http://hdl.handle.net/10486/1010

It is necessary to indicate the DOI in all texts that have it. To check which of the cited works have DOI you can use the Simple Text Query tool (http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/), following these steps:

1) Register on the Simple Text Query portal (http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/): you must enter an email address and click on “Submit”. Shortly afterwards an email will be received at the address provided with a link, in which you have to click to register.

2) Once you have registered, visit the Simple Text Query main page (http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/), enter your email address and paste all the bibliographic listing of your work into the box. The texts must have a recognized format, must be ordered alphabetically and separated from each other by a blank line. Then click on “Submit”, and, in one or two minutes, the system will indicate, highlighting them in red, which texts have DOI.
