About the Journal
Introduction
BSAA arte is a scientific journal that has been published annually by the Department of Art History of the University of Valladolid since 2005, when it took over for the former Boletín del Seminario de Estudios de Arte y Arqueología (ISSN: 0210-9573), founded in 1932 and regularly cited using its acronym, BSAA. When in 2005 this journal was split into two separate publications devoted, respectively, to Art History and Archaeology, the one corresponding to Art History took on its current name, BSAA arte (ISSN: 1888-9751 in its printed version until 2016, which was its standard edition, and 2530-6359 in its electronic version, which is its current standard edition).
The main purpose of BSAA arte is to transmit to the specialised scientific community and to Art History professionals the results of studies on different forms of art, with a primary interest in Spanish art and works from other related countries, although there is also room in the journal for other international contributions.
The digital edition of BSAA arte will maintain the editorial policy that has made this journal an established and scientifically recognised publication, despite the need to continuously adapt to new forms of knowledge dissemination.
Since the 2017 edition, volume LXXXIII, a new chapter began in its publication and dissemination with the adoption of the open access digital format through Open Journal Systems (OJS). The publication is hosted in https://revistas.uva.es, which is managed by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid.
Institutional affiliation
This journal is owned by the University of Valladolid (Spain), which provides its digital hosting and is responsible for its maintenance and management through Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (EdUVa) and the Servicio de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Valladolid (STIC). The University of Valladolid guarantees open access to the contents of the journal. The works published in the journal will be included in the Repositorio Institucional de la Universidad de Valladolid, guaranteeing their long-term preservation.

Since then, it has obtained the renewal of these distinctions, which are still in force today.
Editorial Team
Two thirds of the Editorial Board of BSAA arte are members of the Department of Art History of the University of Valladolid and one third are renowned external specialists. The External Editorial Advisory Board is almost entirely made up of external specialists, including prestigious national and international experts from university institutions, Fine Arts academies, museums and other research centres. A significant share of these are specialists from abroad. The Editorial Board is responsible for conducting detailed and continued monitoring of the publishing process, with the support of the highly qualified members of the External Editorial Advisory Board and other external experts who are asked to draft reports prior to the acceptance of originals submitted for publication in BSAA arte.
Article Editorial Process: Double-blind Peer Review System
The journal does not charge authors any fees for submitting or publishing their articles. However, authors are responsible for the processing and payment of any reproduction rights associated with the images illustrating their work, where applicable.
Under no circumstances will articles written in whole or in part by authors belonging to the University of Valladolid or to the Editorial Board exceed 20% of the total number of articles in each volume and, in any case, such articles will be subject to the same editorial process as all other works.
This editorial process will follow the steps indicated below:
1. Submission of articles by their authors in accordance with the submission guidelines that appear on the journal’s website and within the deadline established therein.
2. Verification by the journal’s Editors that the articles comply with the submission guidelines. If they do not comply, they will be returned to their authors to address the shortcomings detected. During this step, articles will be submitted to the plagiarism prevention tool used by the journal at all times, provided by the Servicio de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Valladolid [Information and Communication Technologies Service of the University of Valladolid] (STIC). The estimated time frame for this step is one week.
3. Admission for processing of articles by the journal’s Editorial Board. The decision on whether to admit an article for processing will not be based on its scientific relevance and quality, which will be assessed, where applicable, by the external reviewers through the double-blind peer review system at a later stage of the editorial process, but on: 1. Its suitability to the Art History scientific field (articles that do not belong to this scientific field, in any of its numerous approaches and specialities, will not be admitted for processing); 2. Originality (plagiarised articles will of course not be admitted for processing, but neither will articles that are redundant with respect to previous publications by the same or different authors or that do not contribute anything of substance with respect to previous publications by the same or different authors, even if not plagiarised; also authors’ articles substantially reproducing parts of their Ph.D. dissertations or other academic works of comparable nature will not be admitted for processing if these works are available in open access platforms of any type); 3. Consistency (articles that are manifestly erratic and lacking in conclusions or that merely present data without a minimum of critical analysis will not be admitted for processing, even if they formally comply with the submission guidelines). The journal cannot send articles that do not comply with the minimum conditions to external reviewers, who voluntarily dedicate part of their time to the journal. Articles about works of art involved in market transactions at the time of submission or publication of the article will not be admitted for processing. The estimated time frame for this step is one month. Authors will be notified of the decision made by the Editorial Board in this respect.
When an article is admitted for processing, the authors will also be informed of the scope (international, national, regional or local) assigned to the article by the Editorial Board, which will be taken into account when prioritising the works to be published in the corresponding volume. Articles labelled of local scope in the admission for processing stage will be peer-reviewed only if the corresponding volume is still not full with articles of broader scope by the end of the submission period, and even in this case, priority will be given to those articles that are significant for the sociocultural context of the publisher.
4. Review of articles by external reviewers through the double-blind peer review system. Articles admitted for processing by the Editorial Board will be examined by two people unrelated thereto, who will act as external reviewers. They will be designated by the Editorial Board according to their specialisation in the field of study. This review will be carried out through the "double-blind" system, i.e. it will be anonymous both in terms of the identity of the authors and the identity of the external reviewers. In addition to being unrelated to the Editorial Board, at least 50% of these external reviewers will be unrelated to the University of Valladolid as the publisher.
In order to maintain the anonymity of the authors during this step, references or citations that could reveal their identity will necessarily be avoided. In the interests of transparency and the journal’s recognition of those who have collaborated as external reviewers, an alphabetical list of all those who have participated in this step of the editorial process during this period will be published every three years, provided that their prior consent has been received. This list will be included in the credits of the corresponding volume. Given the fact that this list may not be complete due to lack of consent and that it is not disaggregated by year, the full information will be made available upon request and on a confidential basis to accredited assessment agencies.
External reviewers will issue a reasoned report on the scientific relevance and quality of the article and on whether or not it should be published based on this. The report may contain comments for the improvement of the work, but it must necessarily respect the intellectual position of the authors, without any pretension intended to impose the reviewers’ points of view (i.e., reports have to simply verify the originality and quality of the article). If both reports coincide, the article will advance to the next step of the editorial process. If not, a third report will be requested.
The estimated time frame for this step may vary, as it is necessary to identify suitable individuals to act as external reviewers, contact them, wait for them to accept the task and, finally, wait for them to complete it, for which they have a deadline of one month (and this may take longer if a third report is necessary). The estimated time frame for this process is three months.
5. Decision on the publication of articles by the journal’s Editorial Board. Based on the reports issued by the external reviewers, the Editorial Board will decide whether to accept or reject the articles for publication. Authors will be notified of this decision together with a summary of the reports issued during the review process. When articles are accepted, this may be conditional on the correction of minor shortcomings detected by the external reviewers. Therefore, acceptance will not be final until such shortcomings are corrected or, where applicable, the alleged shortcomings are discussed in a reasoned manner by the authors of the articles.
Once authors have been notified of the acceptance of the articles for publication, they will have a maximum period of one month to send the final version of their work, in accordance with the applicable requirements. The date of acceptance of the articles will be the date of validation of the final version by the Editorial Board, which will be ratified at the next plenary meeting of the Editorial Board.
6. Editorial production. Once the final version of the articles has been received, the editorial production process will begin, under the responsibility of the journal’s Editors, the technical editorial support team of the Art History Department of the University of Valladolid and the technical team of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid. The journal’s Editors reserve the right to correct typographical or stylistic errors, as well as to give authors any instructions deemed necessary for the best editorial results. In any case, the author will always be able to see such changes before the article is closed and, if necessary, present their arguments in a reasoned and justified manner, as proofs will be provided to validate or correct them.
N.B.: Holiday periods should be deducted from the estimated time frames for the different steps of the editorial process.
Book Reviews
BSAA arte will publish in each volume a limited number of book reviews of outstanding publications appeared in the preceding twenty-four months.
The book reviews section is a closed section. This means that BSAA arte will not admit the submission of book reviews: the Editorial Board will decide which reviews will be published and will entrust their preparation to specialists of its choice, according to their scientific profile. However, authors or organisations having published books they consider relevant for the journal’s scientific field, can send copies of their new publications in order to be considered by the Editorial Board. The sending of these copies, which will be incorporated to the Library of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, will in no case commit the Editorial Board to the publication of the corresponding review.
Publication Frequency
BSAA arte publishes one volume a year, which will be published on its website by the end of the year. The journal will be open for submissions between the 1st December of the preceding year and the 31st May of the year corresponding to the volume. For publication, articles will be prioritized according to their date of submission and their scope (i.e., whether they are of international, national, regional, or local interest: BSAA arte will publish articles of local interest only very exceptionally).
If the issue becomes complete during the aforementioned period of submissions, a note will be posted in the “Notices” section.
Good Practices in Gender Equality
The journal is committed to achieving gender equality, by promoting balance gender representation in its Editorial Team, considered jointly. It will also ensure that gender representation among the reviewers of the submissions is balanced.
The journal includes the full name of the authors of the works it publishes in order to make gender diversity in scientific production more visible.
In accordance with the principle of gender equality, the journal invites authors to consider the use of inclusive language. It recommends replacing the use of the generic masculine with non-discriminatory terms (such as collective nouns or gender-neutral adjectives), avoid expressions that perpetuate gender stereotypes and implement strategies aimed at favoring the most inclusive form of language. Authors are advised to follow the guidelines for the use of gender-inclusive language established by the United Nations.
When writing research works, authors must avoid gender biases whereby the masculine is used as a universal reference. They are advised to consult the European Commission toolkit Gender in research and, where appropriate, provide information about the sex variable in research concerning persons, presenting the results disaggregated by sex.
Privacy Statement
The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the purposes stated by this journal (namely, those relating the processing of manuscripts submitted for publication, their evaluating process, or the distribution of information concerning the published works) and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
Under REGULATION (EU) 2016/679 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation), users can exercise their rights to request access to, and to rectification and erasure (right to be forgotten) of their personal information, restriction of and/or objection to data processing and portability, as well as not to transfer and/ or share your information with third parties individually.
Open Access Policy and Copyright Notice
Once the editing process has been completed, BSAA arte may be consulted openly, so that the contributions are disseminated freely and as widely as possible.
Authors of articles are authorised to include their texts in institutional and academic repositories once the corresponding issue of BSAA arte has been published. The articles must have the same form and length they have in the journal and authors to mention the source correctly and completely.

The articles published at BSAA arte will have a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).
The authors continue as owners of their works, and can republish their articles in another medium without having to request authorisation, as long as they indicate that the work was originally published in BSAA arte.
Code of Conduct
The journal will comply with the ethical code established in the Ediciones Universidad Valladolid Good Practice Guidelines, which adheres to the principles proposed by the Committee on Publications Ethics (COPE). This guide establishes the ethical way of proceeding by authors, editorial committees and reviewers, the content of which is summarized below:
- Authors
Authors of articles must undertake to conduct their research in an ethical and responsible manner, in compliance with prevailing legislation and the aspects included in section 1 of the Ediciones Universidad Valladolid Good Practice Guidelines. Work shall be original and unpublished, and shall be duly attributed to those who have prepared it, avoiding plagiarism (misappropriation of others' work or ideas), self-plagiarism (taking advantage of ideas or previous works of one's own authorship without citing the source) and multiple or redundant publication of the same work. Clear reference should be made to the sources used and to previous papers on the same subject matter, explaining the origin of the data and ideas, of the literal quotations or of other resources (such as graphs, images, tables, etc.). Failure to comply with these aspects may lead to the public disavowal of the articles, as explained in section 2. 2 of the aforementioned guide.
Information from private conversations or discussions with others in academia or science may not be used without their explicit permission. If images or graphics that are not originally from the author are included in the work, they must have express permission to use them and cite the authorship appropriately.
Woks that are being evaluated in whole or in part by another publisher cannot be submitted. Once submitted to Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, the originals cannot be sent to another journal or publisher until the evaluation process has been completed.
- Editorial committee
The members of the editorial committee must ensure the quality of the publications, promoting good practices in research, trying to avoid malpractice and trying to speed up the publication processes.
The evaluation process must be managed fairly and impartially, respecting the thinking of those who have written the work and guaranteeing them the right to disagree with the evaluation reports.
It is the responsibility of the editorial committee to manage the evaluation process of publications fairly and impartially, respecting the thinking of authors and guaranteeing them the right to disagree with the evaluation reports.
Members of the editorial committees must respect the confidentiality of the articles and their contents until the time of publication and may not use the data in the work for their own research, unless they have the express permission of the authors.
The editorial committees may consider the refusal of authors to have their work evaluated by certain persons, evaluating whether the reasons provided are justified, but they are not obliged to dispense with the use of these persons.
The editorial committees shall recognise the work of the reviewers, issuing, where appropriate, the corresponding accreditations to those who have adequately carried out their work.
The editorial committee must try to avoid malpractice in research (redundant publication, plagiarism or selfplagiarism, omission of cited sources, invented, misrepresented, manipulated or unauthorised use of data ...). Where instances of research malpractice are noted in manuscripts received, the author will be invited to correct them if the misuse affects a small part of the article, and the manuscript will be rejected if it affects a substantial part.
If malpractice is discovered after publication, the editorial committee will request clarifications from the author and, after evaluating their explanations, will make a decision on the matter. If only part of the work contains errors, this can be resolved by publishing an erratum. If the malpractice affects a substantial part of the article, it must be retracted, in accordance with the procedure described in section 2. 2 of the Ediciones Universidad Valladolid Good Practice Guidelines.
Likewise, the editorial committee will try to resolve any possible conflicts of interest described in section 2. 4 of the aforementioned guide.
- Reviewer/s
Reviewers must refrain from reviewing the works if they had any relationship with the authors that would advise against it, as explained in section 3 of the Ediciones Universidad Valladolid Good Practice Guidelines.
The work of reviewers must be confidential, both during the evaluation process and after the eventual publication of the evaluated work. Reviewers will not be able to use the evaluated content for their own personal benefit or that of other people, and they must respect the opinions and intellectual position of those who have written the articles, judging the work objectively and impartially, arguing their judgements appropriately, showing respect, constructively correcting possible errors and providing suggestions for improvement with regard to the contents, formal presentation, writing and bibliography used in the work.
In the event that any malpractice is detected in the work reviewed, reviewers must notify the editorial committees so that their members can take the corresponding decisions.
Reviewers are required to submit their reports within the agreed time. If they are unable to complete their task on time, or if they do not consider themselves capable of evaluating the work, they should inform the members of the editorial committees as soon as possible.
Plagiarism Detection Policy
The journal will ensure compliance with good research practices established in the "Ethical Code of Conduct" included in the previous section. In it, authors are advised to avoid plagiarism, self-plagiarism, or multiple or redundant publication. The external reviewers are requested to inform the journal of any cases of malpractice they detect, and the procedure to be followed by the Editorial Board is established. In addition, all articles received will be subjected to a plagiarism detection tool provided by journal has an plagiarism prevention tool provided by the Servicio de Tecnologias de la Información y las Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Valladolid (STIC), and will proceed accordingly in the event that cases of plagiarism are detected.
DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and Preservation of Digital Files
A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) will be assigned to the articles published in the journal. The articles will also be housed in the Repositorio Institucional de la Universidad de Valladolid and in other databases, and will be archived by the Servicio de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Valladolid (STIC).
Information Policy on Funding Sources
If there is any type of public or private funding for the research that has given rise to the article, it must be declared when submitting it, filling in the corresponding section in the metadata box. In the case of multiple authorships, each author must declare all the information related to their sources of information, including the name of the financing entity, the identification number of the financing and the description of the role that the financing entity has played in the investigation. Once the article passes the evaluation, a call to a footnote will be included after its title in which it will be indicated if it has had any type of financing or has been carried out within the framework of a research project.
Interoperability Protocol
The journal has an OAI-PMH interface (Open Archives Initiative - Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) that enables databases or information services to access the metadata of published works. Path to obtain the metadata: https://revistas.uva.es/index.php/bsaaarte/oai?verb=Identify.
