Franciscan missions represent the oldest and most valuable historical heritage in California. Tracing the path from their beginnings will reveal the interest generated in America and Spain, how their heritage has evolved and their current reality arising from the management model in place. The role they play today as cultural institutions and drivers of tourism, especially those in State Historic Parks, has little to do with their initial productive and spiritual purpose.
