Literature about San Salvador Oviedo has been conditioned by the foundational stages of the cathedral. The appearance of the church built by Alfonso II in the 9th century has been interpreted in different ways, on the basis of the records, showing how contradictory is in this regard the documentary evidence. In this article, it is proposed a possible remodelling of the cathedral church at the beginning of the 12th century. This transformation could explain the references to a church with a huge transept of thirty meters in length during the beginning of the works of the new Gothic cathedral in the second half of the 14th century.
