Intervention on Architectural Heritage from a Modern Perspective: Castelao and the Convent of St Clare of Oviedo

The city of Oviedo (Spain) became the home to a great number of convents and monasteries during the first centuries of its history, which played an important role in the urban planning and growth of the city. One of the most outstanding was the convent of St Clare, which has been at the centre of many discussions throughout its long history due to the transformations, reformations, and changes of use it has undergone. In this research we study its most controversial intervention: the one carried out by the Spanish architect Ignacio Álvarez Castelao between 1956 and 1966. Through a graphic and documentary analysis, we study how this relevant representative of the Modern Movement in Asturias carried out a project that can be regarded as one of the few examples in our country of an intervention in a historic building using a modern language.
