The royal pantheon in Nájera was planned in 1545. The architect Juan Martínez de Mutio built its vaults and the painter Alonso Gallego designed twenty-five royal tombs and two heralds of arms. A sculptor, probably Arnao de Bruselas, was required for the execution of the praying figures and the recumbent statues that adorn the pantheon. The sculptures were made of local sandstone, but they were covered with a plaster imitating alabaster.
