Abstract

In clinical practice, it has been observed that those patients with subsyndromal depression disorders who delay the request for professional help, showed more difficulties in recognizing or communicating depressive symptoms. The aim of this study is to determine significant differences in the time of untreated symptoms considering groups according to degrees of emotional confusion (measured with item 1 of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale). The sample included 126 participants with depressive disorder no other specified that consulted for the first time in mental health service at the East Area of Valladolid. Kruskal-Wallis test was applied and showed significant differences between groups (p=0,02). These results are new in our setting and indicate that emotional confusion is associated with delays on asking for professional help. Additionally, it suggests considering psychoeducational interventions centered on recognition, identification of symptoms, and an opportune request for help in mental health resources.
