Febrile neutropenia is a common syndrome in patients receiving chemotherapy. The state of immunosuppression can reduce the clinical expression of the disease in the first hours and cover up potential serious complications. This is an oncological emergency and patients should receive empirical antibiotic therapy within the first hour. Scales have been developed in order to determine stable patients with a higher risk of developing complications.
This article reports a clinical case of febrile neutropenia in a 59-year-old patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and treatment with cisplatin-vinorelbine. Different aspects of febrile neutropenia will be reviewed such as etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
