Review of the clinical utility of the serum proteinogram

The protein electrophoresis test is one of the routine procedures performed in the clinical laboratory. Traditionally, it has been used as a biochemical indicator in various clinical conditions such as liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, and different inflammatory processes. Currently, its primary use focuses on the detection and monitoring of monoclonal gammopathies due to its high clinical sensitivity, as it has been shown that other methods are more suitable for the individual quantification of proteins.
