Author Guidelines

Author Guidelines

Those interested in publishing their collaborations in the monographic dossier or the miscellany should send them in accordance with the guidelines indicated below. Two copies of books for review should preferably be sent to the journal.

The author(s) must take responsibility for the authorship and originality ot the paper sent.

The articles must conform to the article format that can be downloaded from the following link: formato de artículos. We ask the authors to copy the parts of the article and paste them on top of the corresponding parts of the template, maintaining the format of the template in all its aspects (logos, title, summaries and data, sizes and fonts, headings, paragraphs, quotes bleeds, footnotes, final bibliography, headers and footers and page numbers).

      1. Sending manuscripts

1.1. The papers and correspondece will be sent in .doc or .docx format using the journal’s electronic platform. The author(s) must fill in all sections of the application, including complete affiliation (name, postal address of institution and academic category).

1.2. After digitally submitting the paper, the author(s), if they wish, may send and e-mail suggesting a maximum of four expert reviewers (including name, postal address and e-mail). Author(s) may also include the names of those persons they do not wish to act as reviewers, justifying the rejection.

1.3. All papers submitted must be original, must not have been previously published, either totally or partially, in any other medium, and must not have been sent to another journal, either simultaneously or during the period of evaluation.

1.4. Edad Media. Revista de Historia accepts original research articles within its scope. States of the art should not be limited to a summary, they should also contribute original ideas, reflections and perspectives. Interviews are exceptional and will be the decission of the Editorial Board. The journal does not have a medieval document section.

      2. Content, structure and style of the original manuscripts: the different parts of the manuscript, each of which must begin on a new page, will be ordered as follows:

2.1. First page: it will have the following contents:

2.1.1. The complete title: it should refer to the main theme of the manuscript, title and subtitle should be clearly distinguishable (separated by a colon) and unnecessary abbreviations, acronyms and symbols should be avoided. Titles should be sent in Spanish and English. It should not exceed 80 characters, including spaces.

2.1.2. First names (lower case) and surnames (small caps), in that order, of the author(s) of the manuscript. The journal will respect the order of authors.

2.1.3. Academic title of each author and professional category in full and initial capital letter: Doctor in History, Bachelor of Arts..., Professor of Medieval History... Institution or workplace, with complete postal address and e-mail of each author. 2.1.4. Author(s)’ ORCID.

2.1.5. Abstract in a single paragraph of between 80 and 120 words. It should refer to the objectives, sources and methods used, and conclusions. Four or five keywords below the abstract. Abstract and keywords in both Spanish and English.

2.1.6. Index / Summary: The index will be inserted inmediately before the beginning of the text. Each heading, in lower case without italics or bold, will be numbered, except the introduction and a continuous succession for the headings in the following way: 1.; 1.1.; 1.1.1.; 2.; 2.1.; 2.2. etc.

2.1.7. Declaration of funding received (grants, research projects...)

2.2. Text: Manuscripts must be original and will have between 50,000 and 75,000 characters, including spaces and footnotes, for both Dossier and Miscellany. The Editorial Board reserves the right to publish longer articles. If the article includes tables, graphics or images, the size of the article will be reduced by 2500 characters per page occupied by the said images. Bold and small caps will be avoided, except in headings. Microsoft Word “styles” will be avoided.

2.2.1. Article structure: articles should have an introduction, main text and conclusions. The introduction will briefly present the aim of the study, method and sources. The conclusion will focus on original contributions and future lines of research and debate.

2.2.2. Headings: First-level headings should be in small caps, second-level headings in lower case and third-level headings in italics; all of them in bold, same size and font as the the text, separated by double spacing, before and after, no indentation.

2.2.3. Quotations: Author(s) must appropiately cite ideas or data taken from other authors. The text must be reproduced exactly. Cited texts from medieval sources will be in italics without quotation marks. Cited text in modern languages will be between quotation marks (“…”) and without italics. Short quotations will be included in the text itself, but long quotations will be in written as a separate paragraph, in Times New Roman 11 pts, left indentation 0.75 cm, before and after a blank line.

Author(s) must reproduced exactly cited texts, including erratas or factual mistakes. In the author(s) wish to modify the text, [sic] must be used after the original word or expression. Inserted text must be written inside square brackets [ ]. Ellipsis (...) will be used when a part of the text is omitted, between square brackets when in the middle.

Quotations in a different language of that of the article should be in the original language. A translation may be added inmediately after the quotation between brackets or in a footnote. For long quotations in a different language, the translation should be in a footnote.

2.3. Footnotes and references:

2.3.1. Footnote calls will be sequential arabic numbers, in the form of a superindex, without brackets. They must be after  punctuation marks.

2.3.2. Acronyms and abbreviations, except for those well-known for the speciality, will be clearly specified in an initial footnote marked with an asterisk «*».

2.3.3. In addition to published manuscripts, references can be made to papers admitted but as yet unpublished in the following manner: (forthcoming).

2.3.4. When secondary sources are cited, the reference will be preceded by the phrase: “Cited in...”.

2.3.5. When the reference refers to only a part of the book, chapter, article..., the pertinent pages will be cited at the end of the reference.

2.3.6.  References in footnotes will use Chicago, notes and bibliography, style (17th ed), as follows:

2.4. Tables: They must be inserted in the text, numbered in consecutive order (1, 2, 3...), with the title at the top and, if needed, explicative footnotes at the bottom. In all cases the source(s) must be cited at the bottom. Row and column headings must be clearly identified. The table must be designed to fit the standard review size (125 x 190 mm).

2.5. Figures: Images, figures, graphs, maps and similar elements accompanying the text must also be inserted in the text numbered in consecutive order (1, 2, 3...), with the title at the top and, if needed, explicative footnotes at the bottom. In all cases the source(s) must be cited at the bottom.

Images, figures and similar elements must be of high quality, in .jpg, .pdf, .tif. They must be copyright free or have the pertinent licence. The author is responsible for obtaining the said licence. Scales must be graphic, not numerical. The image must be designed to fit the standard review size (125 x 190 mm).

2.6. Appendices and Annexes: they must be included at the end of the text numbered in consecutive order, with the title at the top (Appendix 1...). The maximun size of the manuscript will include any appendices or annexes (see 2.2.).

2.7. Bibliography: The reference bibliography will appear at the end of the article, according to the Chicago style, notes and bibliography, rules. The entries will be listed in alphabetical order by surname and date of publication. Each reference must be separated from the previous one with a blank line. The author(s)’ surnames and names cannot be omitted even though they appear consecutively in two references. The bibliography is not included in the maximun size of the manuscript (see 2.2.).

If the publication has an uniform resource identifiers, such as DOI or Handle, it will be included at the end of the reference, without including the URL or date of query.

It is necessary to indicate the DOI in all texts that have it. To check which of the cited works have DOI you can use the Simple Text Query tool (http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/), following these steps:

1) Register on the Simple Text Query portal (http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/): you must enter an email address and click on “Submit”. Shortly afterwards an email will be received at the address provided with a link, in which you have to click to register.

2) Once you have registered, visit the Simple Text Query main page (http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/), enter your email address and paste all the bibliographic listing of your work into the box. The texts must have a recognized format, must be ordered alphabetically and separated from each other by a blank line. Then click on “Submit”, and, in one or two minutes, the system will indicate, highlighting them in red, which texts have DOI.

2.8. Reviews: Book reviews are requested by the Editorial Board. The maximum length is 8,500 characters, spaces included. They must include publication data at the beginning (see 2.7.1). In collective books with more than five authors, the Editorial Board may extend the said maximum up to 15,000 characters. The following information must be included at the end of the text: name and surname(s) of the review author, academic affiliation, and e-mail. The book reviews must be sent before March 1st of the year of publication.

We ask the authors to copy the parts of the article and paste them on top of the corresponding parts of the template, maintaining the format of the template in all its aspects (logos, title, summaries and data, sizes and fonts, headings, paragraphs, quotes bleeds, footnotes, final bibliography, headers and footers and page numbers).

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • 1. I am responsible for the authorship and originality of the work I submit. I hereby certify that this paper has not been previously published in any other Journal and I declare that I will not send it for evaluation to any other scientific Journal until Edad Media. Revista de Historia informs me of the results.
  • 2. The document sent is in Microsoft Word.
  • 3. All illustrations, figures and tables are within the text in their due places. If the work includes images, I hold their publishing rights.
  • 5. If you are sending an article that will be evaluated anonymously, make sure that you have not included any information that may identify you.
  • 6. To submit an article in "Step 3. Enter Metadata", do not forget to include your name, surname and email address, as well as the title of the article, its keywords and abstracts in Spanish and English. To do this, please select the "Spanish" language in the box that appears at the top of the page and include the information in Spanish; then, select the “English” language in the same box and enter the information in English. You must also fill in the “Affiliation” box, indicating the name and mailing address of your institution and academic category.
  • 4. The text conforms in format with all bibliographic and publishing standards indicated in the "Author Guidelines" (in the section "About: Submissions").

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the purposes stated by this journal (namely, those relating the processing of manuscripts submitted for publication, their evaluating process, or the distribution of information concerning the published works) and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
