This paper will, on the one hand, search the chancellors’ records for all the ecclesiastics in the royal service of Alfonso X of Castile during the ‘succession debate’, and identify who among them remained loyal to King Alfonso and who to the infant of Castile, Don Sancho (1282-1284). On the other hand, it will underline the role that the Church played as an institution in the period, inasmuch as the power of the Church was one of the main factors influencing the stability or instability of the kingdom’s structure. It will also show how individual clerics dealt with their personal ambitions and ecclesiastical obligations.
