The case study presented in this article, dealing with a small village near Montpellier, allows us to reconsider the issue of liberties in the Middle Ages. We will not be adopting a theoretical or exegetic perspective but that of the ‘History from below’ current of historical thought. Drawing on the impressive array of documents preserved by this rural community, our study traces the century-long chain of events leading towards the King of France’s granting it the status of consulat in 1344. It will enable us to understand how a community such as this one envisages in a very particular manner the notion of liberties and how its inhabitants take particular courses of action to defend and preserve them.
