Alexandra Kollontai and censorship in post-Francoism: the boom of the new woman

Russian politician, Marxist theorist, and feminist Alexandra Kollontai (Saint Petersburg, 1872-Moscow, 1952) was translated for the first time in Spain during the 1930s. Silenced by Francoism, after the dictator’s death, the Kollontai boom arrived. Between 1975 and 1979, ten works were translated in different progressive publishing houses in Barcelona and Madrid. Anagrama published the first two: La oposición obrera (1975) and Autobiografía de una mujer sexualmente emancipada (1975). After contextualizing the women’s movements and the publishing activity of the time, this article focuses on censorship and its effects on these two essays published in the second half of the seventies. In this way, we will discover how the censoring authorities reacted to the possibility of translating works by Kollontai, considered by the regime to be a dangerous author as a Marxist and feminist.
