Abstract

When in 1868 the revolution triumphed in Spain and the Constitution of 1869 was approved, the overseas territories still retained slavery. The rights and freedoms proclaimed were not enough to cancel a slave-holding system that was based on property, order and economic interests. The first abolitionist norm was characterized by gradualism and ambiguity.
