Abstract

This study is focused in one of the most important factor of the international policy of the Hispanic Monarchy in the Mediterranean at the beginning of Charles II reign: the ottoman military expansion in the eastern Mediterranean, above all in the island of Candia, in hard dispute between venetians and ottomans from 1645. This conflict affected to the Hispanic-Venetian diplomacy, that was characterized by the Spanish Monarchy’ attempts to avoid the loss of this bulwark of the Christianity and to prevent a peace treaty between the Republic of Venice and the Turks, which would leave in serious risk their Italian lands to the ottoman military invasion.
