Abstract

This essay discusses the possibility of applying the concept of transcoding to the study of the history of political and ethical thought. The term was born in the world of computing to designate the transit of a message in a given digital language to another. The important thing is that any transcoding process implies not only a code change, but a message change as well, because there is no absolute compatibility between languages. Semiotics and Translation Theory adopted this concept because it explained the problematic of encoding and decoding operations. The specific hypothesis is the use of transcoding as a methodological perspective on the historical study of political and ethical thought of the 16th and 17th centuries.
