The risk premium of the agricultural firms. Analysis of the Spanish case (1994-2023)

The aim of “The risk premium of the agricultural firms. Analysis of the Spanish case (1994-2023)”, is to determine the behavior of the risk premium, whether its value differs from that recorded for all economic activities and what interpretation can be made of it. In addition, some financial variables have been investigated: profitability of assets, profitability of equity, financial margin and sectoral debt. The conclusions of the article are: the level of indebtedness of the Spanish agricultural firms has not been comparatively higher than that of other economic activities, the profitability deficit of the Spanish countryside is due to the lower profitability of the assets it incorporates and the equity invested in the agricultural business has been less profitable than its alternative investment in other activities. The results of this study indicate that, in the short and medium term, the structural deficiencies of the agricultural firms encourage the search for profitability in vertical integration.
