Recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST): The decline of a new technology created in the USA

An attempt is made to follow events since 2000 in the US, which suggest the causes of the failure to use rBST (Posilac). The text reviews utilization rate, political, legal and media incidences, effects of use on milk production and animal health, impact of the consumption of milk, dairy and meat from treated animals on human health, role of labeling of milk from treated cows for the consumer and environmental impact.
Faced with the FDA's strong favorable position, consumer pressure, support from the dairy industry and distribution since 2007, expressed in the labeling of milk and its products ("rBST Free"), led to the decline of the new technology. Consumers' stance was fundamentally based on their reservations about rBST in consumer health, animal welfare and animal health.
