Test space as a tool for generational change in agriculture: from theory to practice through the Basque example

This research addresses the problem of the lack of generational renewal in agriculture and explores imaginative alternatives to facilitate access for new farmers. In seeking solutions, we consider the need to create a space where aspiring farmers can test their vocation. Our proposal aligns with the agrarian test space initiative but introduces a novel component: legal protection for the participants. By involving agricultural institutions, local development groups, and those responsible for employment initiatives, we offer candidates social and economic protection for two years while they develop and refine their agricultural projects. Additionally, this approach allows the trial period to be conducted on private farms in need of support and/or labor, thereby providing stability and contributing to their continuity.
