Transhumanism and Posthumanism: Biotechnological Cartographies

Undoubtedly, transhumanism and posthumanism constitute an axis of contemporary social thought, on these concepts have fallen the debates on the future of humanity, conjugating biotechnological advances, philosophy and utopian discourses. The abundance of reference material on these categories can turn them into a matter of academic fashion, even leading them into the spheres of conspiracy and technological fanaticism/apocalypse. This essay seeks to discuss these categories within the biotechnological and bioethical scenario by exploring the "classical" and "contemporary" literature on this subject, starting from the question: Are posthumanism and transhumanism heading towards a utopia that will save human beings from their end or will they become a dystopia of the end of humanity?
