Physical activity, social integration and young people: a case study on the uses of sport in a disadvantaged neighborhood

This article explores the meanings and sporting practices of disadvantaged young people, one of the groups that has attracted most attention in the field of social inclusion through sport. The methodological approach used was a case study through participant observation and semi-structured interviews in the neighborhood of La Coma, a priority action neighborhood in the Valencian Community. The results show how the meanings that young people give to the use of their own bodies in physical practices, the relationship with rules and the use of spaces define sporting and institutional logics which, in this area of sport-integration, are interwoven in an uncoordinated way, hindering the continuity of young people's sporting experiences, which is necessary to increase the possibilities of achieving positive effects through sport in disadvantaged contexts.
