The Building Process of the Lignum Crucis’ Chapel of the Royal Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana (Cantabria)

The documentation we provide allows us establishing two phases in the building process of the Holy Chamber (or Lignum Crucis´ Chapel) of the Royal Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana (Cantabria). After a failed attempt by the Dukes of the Infantado (1632), works began in 1675 under the patronage of the 10th Admiral of Castile. The completion of the building process was directed by the Biscay architect Juan Bautista de Arbaiza (1718-1721). He transformed the previously initiated work into a Baroque space magnified by the presence of one of the few stone-made octagonal lanterns of 18th-century Spain.
