Resumen

T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats (1939) gained popularity due to its adaptation as an acclaimed musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber (1981). For Eliot, the popular entertainment was a great source of inspiration, which makes examining the opposite process especially interesting—to see how his poetry inspired other arts and how its adaptation has interpreted or transferred Practical Cats’ strong rhythm and sense of humour. The focus of this paper will be on how Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats is in tune with Eliot’s theories regarding drama, music, and dance, especially influenced by music hall.
