From peace to peace. Since the truce of Antwerp (1609) to the agreements of Xanten (1614)

The death without direct heirs of the Duke of Cleves in 1609, just days before the signing of the Treaty of Antwerp, was the touchstone on which to test the solidity of the agreement. Control of the territories of Cleves, Juliers, Berg and the Mark were essential to the military future of both sides. Philip III was forced to change his policy towards the northern provinces due to the increasing political complication created by the struggles of the contenders to inherit the duchy. This, together with the emperor’s inaction, the need to maintain the recently signed truce and the requirement to strategically guarantee the stability of the military front with the United Provinces forced the King of Spain to intervene in the dispute. As a result, the Xanten agreements on 1614 became essential for the future of the Flanders War.
