Os superiores não sabem o que custa a prata ganhar! The figure of the procurator in the context of missions in the East Indies (17th cent.)

The essay describes, with reference to the missions in Japan, the multiple functions performed by the procurators within the religious orders in the early modern age, highlighting at first the economic nature of these functions, since the procurators were responsible for finding and managing the resources needed to finance missionary activity. It then examines the profiles of three procurators, Nuno Rodrigues, Nicolas Trigault y Diego Collado, two Jesuits and a Dominican, in order to emphasise also the important diplomatic and cultural roles that were linked to these figures.
