The establishment of the Stamped Paper tax in the 17th century. Adaptation and administrative variations in the Indies

The difficult financial situation that characterized the reign of Philip IV forced the establishment of new taxes that would provide the income that the Crown needed. One of them was sealed paper, which began to operate in Castile from January 1 1637 and in the Indies from 1640, where it was introduced with some variations with respect to the peninsula, both from the administrative and economic point of view and from use by the population, to adapt it to overseas circumstances.
