Violence, Economy and Empire: Service in War and Private Benefit in the Hispanic Monarchy

The war on the borders of the Hispanic Monarchy in the early Modern Age was sustained with the resources mobilized by the direct administration of the sovereign, but its development was also supported by the expectations of private benefit of individuals. The exercise of violence, and the benefits that were expected to be obtained from it, thus generated forms of appropriation, exchange and circulation of goods that have not attracted much attention from scholars. This economy, partly informal, supported the imperial fronts and made it easier for the Monarchy to have sufficient actors and means, thus perpetuating forms of private war.
