Candidates for the presidency of the Chancery of Valladolid in 1778

The promotion of Raimundo Irabien to Councilor of Castile in 1778 left the presidency of the Chancery of Valladolid vacant. Seven magistrates were proposed to cover it, three at the suggestion of the Chamber, and the rest by individual votes of members of the Council of Castile. The trajectory of the seven candidates is analyzed, the confidential reports that were in the hands of the Chamber of Castile, and their performance in the high administration after their candidacy in 1778. The appointee was Gregorio Portero de Huerta who had the vote of the counselor José Acedo and the prosecutor Campomanes. Portero was a manteist and trained at the San Clemente school in Bolonia, circumstances that were decisive in his election.
