Hero or villain? Winston Churchill and the cancellation of the past

For decades Winston Churchill was respected and admired with virtual unanimity. However, nowadays, inside and outside the academy, some question his figure. His mistakes and contradictions had already been addressed by his biographers as part of an intense life and a complex personality. The difference is that now they try to impugn his trajectory in a global way without providing new documentation. This attempt at “cancellation” highlights the need for the work of the historian, who must explain, contextualize and provide data avoiding Manichean simplification, anachronism and presentism.
