Abstract

This article pursues the study of one of the most important charities of Majorca during the eighteenth century. The evolution of this hospice and the important reforms it underwent during the year 1799, in line with the enlightened policies of Charles III and his ministers, will be analyzed here. In addition, this paper seeks to reflect on the closure of poor people in the house of Mercy and the problems that are always present around this issue.
