The female labour market in an inland city: Segovia 1860-1905

The following paper discusses the evolution of female participation in the labour market in inland and preindustrial city of Segovia from 1860 to 1905. For this reason, Several sources have been used for this article such as census 1860, 1881 and 1905, domestic service cards, industrial license plates, municipal regulation of certain trades, the Official Gazette of the Province and local newspaper. Despite the difficulties encountered in researching this topic (principally due to exclusion of female themes in official documentation), this article reviews the key roles performed by women during the period, particularly the provision of domestic services and wet nurse. Finally, an approach to the world of prostitution is made.
