Seigneurial economy, estrategies and marriage: The wedding behaviour of the House of Medina Sidonia (1492-1658)
Keywords:
family, lineage, economy, marriage, mayorazgo, nobility, house of Medina SidoniaAbstract
Based on the case study of the House of Medina Sidonia, this article offers a study about the nuptial strategies of the Castilian aristocracy, bringing together both economical management and the main political goals followed. The economical management is conceived here taking into account the whole economical life-cycle of the noble couples, including dowries, the legal amounts reserved for all heirs (legítimas), testaments and properties not included in the mayorazgos. We claim that a basic clue, too often neglected, when dealing with the high Cas-tilian nobility weddings lays in the strategic dimension of their basis of power joint under the name of mayorazgos.
