Towards a feeling geography: emotions in the Sahrawi exile process

Spain’s abandonment and the Moroccan and Mauritanian invasion of the territory of Western Sahara between 1975 and 1976 led to the separation of the Sahrawi population. One part decided to remain in a territory that would eventually be occupied by its neighbours. Others fled into the desert in an exodus that led them to take refuge near the Algerian town of Tindūf. From interviews with the latter population, we have been able to identify how the logical nostalgic attachment to the place of origin goes hand in hand with the need to adapt to the hostile environment in which they live. Exile has shaped a series of emotional characteristics that have conditioned the population, generating tensions, conflicts and provoking certain dilemmas related to the need to (out)live in time.
