Love letters sent to French soldiers and exchanged between patriots intercepted during the Spanish War of Independence (1809–1810)

The epistolary genre gains special relevance against the backdrop of sociocultural history and the history of emotions. This article analyzes four letters sent and addressed to French and Spanish soldiers during the War of Independence. They are compared with letters exchanged by spouses during the Great War in order to identify similar and dissimilar emotional behaviors expressed by both sexes, the subjective expressions of love between spouses and partners in transgressive liaisons, and their construction of long-distance relationships.
