The objective of the article is to demonstrate if the contraction of the grains` offer, due to reiterated bad harvests, may explain the strong price increase suffered in 1803 and 1804, or whether other factors were responsible. The conclusion is that the shortage and high price was the result of the ineffectiveness of the municipal grain stores and the bad function of the market, rather than the adverse agricultural situation. The market was restricted as the neighbours, under the protection of the councilors, impeded the extraction of grains and the Court applied pressure to the surplus production of both Castiles to supply Madrid and the armed forces.
