The quality of coinage was one of the main concerns for European Monarchies during the Early Modern period. Coinage was an exclusive royal prerogative in the theoretical framework of the Crown and coinage counterfeiting was already considered a crime of high treason under royal laws. However, it is important to understand the specific form in witch the Hispanic Crown protected this matter of state. This paper argues that research in the 18th century and the urban context might be a way in to provide some answers.
