For a woman, giving birth in the past represented a low chance of survival, as well as losing the child during the same or in the following days. This text broaches pregnancy and childbirth in the diocese of Lugo, with special attention to rural areas during the 17th-19th centuries. Through the information of baptismal registers and other sources, it is intended to reconstruct the behavior of women from the previous period to childbirth until their subsequent recovery.
