Despite being one of the most neglected areas of military history, the military press provides a great deal of information about the situation of the army in a specific period. Its interest lies in that the newspapers are written by the soldiers and read by the same soldiers, allowing the reader to know what were the topics that most worried the soldiers of the moment. This article tries to analyze specific newspapers (those direct by the military journalist and legislator Antonio Vallecillo Luján) at a certain time (the Regency of Espartero, after the end of the First Carlist War), seeking to know the way in which a part of the army saw itself and put it in writing for everyone to read in a postcivil war context.
