This article reflects on the educational and research dimension of digital journalism at Spanish universities. It starts with a prospective analysis of the main lines of work and trends within the international context in digital journalism in the last two decades to point out the study and future challenges for Spanish universities in this field. The description allows us to point out that many of the studies on digital journalism have focused on analysing how digital technologies transform journalistic processes, practices and standards. It concludes by pointing out the need for a more approach to digital journalism's social and structural dimension, beyond the technological facet, capable of framing the discipline in a broader media and social ecology.
