Ramón Buenaventura: Literature as the only guarantee of identity

The following article analyzes the figure of the writer Ramón Buenaventura (Tangiers, 1940), an extraordinary example to understand what meant for so many people born in Tangiers felt throwed out since 1956 from the only place they had known as their own until then. The confusion and the desolation of not knowing where they belong was converted by the author into literary material through which he sustains his memory until it became the only element that endorsed the past on which to build identity. The problem arises when, along with this, melancholy becomes a trap: It serves as a shield and behind it they are unable to carry the responsibilities of their future because confronting any avatar there is no longer Tangiers giving them their endorsement, and nostalgia and dislocation returns.
