The elderly spend many hours of their day in sedentary behavior and understanding its determinants is essential to reduce its biopsychosocial consequences. We carried out a review of narrative literature in order to describe the determinants of sedentary behavior in this population. The studies were systematically analyzed, going through several stages of selection, investigating two theoretical models and empirical evidence. Six groups of determinants related to the individual and the community were identified. These data will be useful information for all those wishing to combat this problem and help provide a better quality of life for the elderly
