Systematic review of the impact of hospital admission on functional decline in the elderly population. The importance of the role of nursing.

Introduction: The elderly population plays an important role in our country's demographic process, with increased life expectancy going hand in hand with increased public spending. As the population ages, chronic conditions increase and correlate with loss of independence and decreased ability to perform basic and instrumental activities of daily living. Studies have been conducted that highlight the positive effect of admission to an acute geriatric unit in improving functional status and mobility.
Objective: To analyze the existing evidence on the relationship between functional decline and hospitalization of elderly patients (≥ 65 years).
Methodology: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Scielo, and Dialnet for the search and PRISMA and STROBE to evaluate the scientific evidence of the articles.
Results: Nineteen studies were selected for analysis. The main complications during hospitalization in elderly patients are: increased dependence, increased risk of falls, loss of mobility, and increased frailty. Acute Care Units for geriatric patients improve their functional capacity upon discharge. Nurses intervene in modifiable factors, developing specialized care within a multidisciplinary team.
Conclusions: The relationship between hospital admission of elderly patients (≥65 years) and the deterioration of their functional capacity and independence is confirmed, as is the importance of nurses in the care of these patients.
