The monthly journal Textil, the official organ of the Spanish National Textile Syndicate, is an as yet unexploited resource for shedding light on the economic and political conditions surrounding the Spanish textile industry during the long period of isolation and self-sufficiency that spanned from 1944 to 1960. Analysis of the earliest issues (1944-1948) of this seemingly innocent publication reveals how its origins were rooted in the Franco regime’s desire to consolidate the Nuevo Estado through tight control of the media and the spreading of messages in favour of an illusory Imperio across all the country’s economic and social sectors.
