The fulfilment of “Easter duties” in Salamanca during the first decade of the Restoration. A gender study.

Spanish historiography has predominantly adopted cultural and discursive approaches to examine the processes of feminisation and masculinisation of religion. Building upon the insights offered by these perspectives, this article seeks to complement them through a quantitative analysis of Easter duty observance in the dioceses of Salamanca and Ciudad Rodrigo during the first decade of the Bourbon Restoration (1874–1885). The study aims to research whether the perception of contemporaries regarding the greater piety of women stemmed from men’s relative disengagement from religious obligations, the internalisation of nineteenth-century notions of sexual difference, or a combination of such (or other) factors.
