This article examines the role of patronage in reshaping the pro-Habsburg Valencian elite during the War of Spanish Succession (1701–1714), focusing on the client network of Don José de Cardona. It explores how his influence facilitated access to administrative positions, distinguishing between those who advanced through his direct intervention and those integrated by other means. The study highlights how the conflict and the postwar reorganization of imperial power altered these trajectories, making exile a new path for social mobility. Ultimately, it analyzes the impact of clientelism on the transformation of the pro-Habsburg aristocracy within the imperial administration
