Abstract

This text analyzes in its entirety and context the trial of residence against viceroy Melchor de Navarra. Such analytical approach confirms how the list of charges and successive sentences doesn´t show a true reflection of his management, nor of the alleged misconducts he may had committed. Moreover, it reveals a latent struggle with the judge, and also the mobilization of all kinds of resources to favour an initially adverse process through legal channels and others that transgressed the legality or morally accepted. Thus, the results obtained allow us to outline a broadest, more complex and subtle reading of the procedure itself, as well as that of the actions and potential illicit practices of this viceroy, refuting formulations that have been held up to now.
