About the Journal

About the review

MariCorners: Revista de Estudios Interdisciplinares LGTBIA+ y queer is a biannual journal whose main objectives are to generate a space for the dissemination and exchange of interdisciplinary knowledge among people who study LGTBIA+ and queer issues. The preference is for studies written in Spanish, but the journal is open to other languages such as English or French, commonly used as academic languages, and other minoritized languages used in Spanish-speaking territories. It is a project developed by the MariCorners association which, since 2017, has organized and set up spaces and initiatives for the promotion and dissemination of research works in any field of specialty, as long as it is related to affective and gender diversity.

MariCorners: Revista de Estudios Interdisciplinares LGTBIA+ y queer follows the path of the series of monographies published by the association in collaboration with the Library of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (2021 and 2022) , as well as with Egales Publishing House (2020 and 2023).

Institutional affiliation

This journal is owned by the University of Valladolid (Spain), which provides its digital hosting and is responsible for its maintenance and management through Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (EdUVa) and the Servicio de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Valladolid (STIC). The University of Valladolid guarantees open access to the contents of the journal. The works published in the journal will be included in the Repositorio Institucional de la Universidad de Valladolid, guaranteeing their long-term preservation.

Dissemination, indexing and categorization

All the issues of the magazine can be looked up in the UVaDOC Documentary Repository of the University of Valladolid. Due to the recent creation of the publication, it is not yet indexed or collected in bibliographic databases. However, the criteria of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) are scrupulously followed along the publication process, so that this situation can be remedied as soon as possible.

Editorial board

The Editorial Board of MariCorners: Revista de Estudios Interdisciplinares LGTBIA+ y queer is made up of the Association's Directive Board, which includes researchers with a proven track record in the study of affective and sex-gender diversity in different fields. The external Scientific committee is made up practically entirely of advisers  external to the University of Valladolid, with a list of prestigious national and international scholars belonging to university institutions, museums, collectives and other research centers, and with a significant percentage of specialists from foreign institutions. The Editorial Board is in charge of closely and continuously monitoring the editorial process, and relies on the support provided by the highly qualified members of the External Scientific Board and those other experts from outside the Editorial Board who are requested to report on the originals submitted  prior to their acceptance for publication in the journal.

The inclusion of articles written by authors belonging to the University of Valladolid is limited to 20% of the total of each volume and, in any case, they are subjected to the same regime as the rest of the authors.

The journal does not charge the authors with any expenses for submitting their works or for publishing them, but the authors will be in charge, where appropriate, of processing and paying for the reproduction rights of the images that may illustrate their study.

The authors of articles are authorized to disseminate their texts in institutional and academic repositories, once the number of MariCorners: Revista de Estudios Interdisciplinares LGTBIA+ y queer in which they are included has been published, and in the same form and length that they have in the journal.  Correct and complete references will be mandatory.

Peer review process of articles

After being admitted by the Editorial Board, the articles will be examined by two evaluators external to the Editorial Board, who will choose them according to their field of expertise.  This review will be done by the “blind peer review” system, that is, it will be anonymous both in terms of the identity of the authors and of the evaluators and the content of their reports. In the event of a clear discrepancy between the two reviewing reports, a third opinion will be requested.

The Editorial Board will notify the authors about the evaluations and, where appropriate, the observations of the reviewers. If modifications are necessary, the decision on the publication will not be final until the author incorporates them into their study, for which they will have one month, besides vacation periods. Once they receive the final version of the article, and taking into account the reports received, the Editorial Board will decide on its publication of the originals and will notify the authors accordingly.

In order to maintain the anonymity of the authorship of the article in the peer review, revealing references or citations will be avoided.

As long as the reviewers do not express their inconvenience, an alphabetical list with their names and affilations will be published every three years.

Publication frequency

MariCorners: Revista de Estudios Interdisciplinares LGTBIA+ y queer publishes two issues per year: a monographic one on a specific topic and a miscellaneous one. The period for receiving articles will remain open between December 1 of the preceding year and May 31 of the year corresponding to the volume.

If the content of the issue is completed during the period for receiving articles, it will be notified in the "Announcements" section.

Notice about the editing process

The Editorial Board reserves the right to correct mechanical or style errors, as well as to transmit to the authors as many instructions as it considers appropriate to guarantee the best version of the textispublished. In any case, the author will always be able to see such modifications before the article is accepted and, where appropriate, express their disagreements in a reasoned and justified manner.

Good practices in gender equality

The magazine is committed to achieving gender equality, promoting that the percentages of people whose registered sex is female or male involved in its editorial team, considered jointly, be equal. In the same way, it will pay special attention to the inclusion of non-binary people in its editorial team and in the article evaluation process. It will also try to ensure an equal gender proportion among the team of reviewers. The journal includes the full names of authors of the works it publishes.

In accordance with the principle of equality, the journal invites authors to use inclusive forms in their texts. In Spanish, it is recommended to replace the use of the generic masculine by other terms that are not discriminatory and that can be understood both as direct and indirect non-binary language, to avoid expressions that perpetuate gender stereotypes and to use strategies aimed at achieving the most inclusive language possible, following the guidelines established in this regard by the United Nations.

Research papers will try to avoid gender biases that use the masculine as a universal reference. In this sense, it is advisable to consult the manual Gender in research published by the European Community, and, where appropriate, report on sex in research on people, presenting the results disaggregated by sex.

Code of Conduct

The journal will comply with the ethical code established in the Ediciones Universidad Valladolid Good Practice Guidelines, which adheres to the principles proposed by the Committee on Publications Ethics (COPE). This guide establishes the ethical way of proceeding by authors, editorial committees and reviewers, the content of which is summarized below:

  1. Authors

Work shall be original and unpublished, and shall be duly attributed to those who have prepared it, avoiding plagiarism (misappropriation of others' work or ideas), self-plagiarism (taking advantage of ideas or previous works of one's own authorship without citing the source) and multiple or redundant publication of the same work. Clear reference should be made to the sources used and to previous papers on the same subject matter, explaining the origin of the data and ideas, of the literal quotations or of other resources (such as graphs, images, tables, etc.). Failure to comply with these aspects may lead to the public disavowal of the articles, as explained in section 2. 2 of the aforementioned guide.

Information from private conversations or discussions with others in academia or science may not be used without their explicit permission. If images or graphics that are not originally from the author are included in the work, they must have express permission to use them and cite the authorship appropriately.

Woks that are being evaluated in whole or in part by another publisher cannot be submitted. Once submitted to Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, the originals cannot be sent to another journal or publisher until the evaluation process has been completed.

  1. Editorial committee

The members of the editorial committee must ensure the quality of the publications, promoting good practices in research, trying to avoid malpractice and trying to speed up the publication processes.

The evaluation process must be managed fairly and impartially, respecting the thinking of those who have written the work and guaranteeing them the right to disagree with the evaluation reports.

It is the responsibility of the editorial committee to manage the evaluation process of publications fairly and impartially, respecting the thinking of authors and guaranteeing them the right to disagree with the evaluation reports.

Members of the editorial committees must respect the confidentiality of the articles and their contents until the time of publication and may not use the data in the work for their own research, unless they have the express permission of the authors.

The editorial committees may consider the refusal of authors to have their work evaluated by certain persons, evaluating whether the reasons provided are justified, but they are not obliged to dispense with the use of these persons.

The editorial committees shall recognise the work of the reviewers, issuing, where appropriate, the corresponding accreditations to those who have adequately carried out their work.

The editorial committee must try to avoid malpractice in research (redundant publication, plagiarism or selfplagiarism, omission of cited sources, invented, misrepresented, manipulated or unauthorised use of data ...). Where instances of research malpractice are noted in manuscripts received, the author will be invited to correct them if the misuse affects a small part of the article, and the manuscript will be rejected if it affects a substantial part.

If malpractice is discovered after publication, the editorial committee will request clarifications from the author and, after evaluating their explanations, will make a decision on the matter. If only part of the work contains errors, this can be resolved by publishing an erratum. If the malpractice affects a substantial part of the article, it must be retracted, in accordance with the procedure described in section 2. 2 of the Ediciones Universidad Valladolid Good Practice Guidelines.

Likewise, the editorial committee will try to resolve any possible conflicts of interest described in section 2. 4 of the aforementioned guide.

  1. Reviewer/s

Reviewers must refrain from reviewing the works if they had any relationship with the authors that would advise against it, as explained in section 3 of the Ediciones Universidad Valladolid Good Practice Guidelines.

The work of reviewers must be confidential, both during the evaluation process and after the eventual publication of the evaluated work. Reviewers will not be able to use the evaluated content for their own personal benefit or that of other people, and they must respect the opinions and intellectual position of those who have written the articles, judging the work objectively and impartially, arguing their judgements appropriately, showing respect, constructively correcting possible errors and providing suggestions for improvement with regard to the contents, formal presentation, writing and bibliography used in the work.

In the event that any malpractice is detected in the work reviewed, reviewers must notify the editorial committees so that their members can take the corresponding decisions.

Reviewers are required to submit their reports within the agreed time. If they are unable to complete their task on time, or if they do not consider themselves capable of evaluating the work, they should inform the members of the editorial committees as soon as possible.
