The construction of dissident sexual identity through mass media in El dia que va morir Marilyn, by Terenci Moix

Terenci Moix entered into the Catalan literature during the beginning of an era: the entry of Western societies into postmodernity. Furthermore, he did it in a language, Catalan, that was struggling to become normalized in its own territory, after being banned and persecuted by the Francoist regime. In this context, his works represent a renewal for this literature, caused, on the one hand, by the themes his books introduce (countercultural, erotic and main LGBTIAQ+ characters) and, on the other hand, by the claim he makes of mass media (cinema, radio, comics, songs and television, among many others). Precisely, this paper explores the importance of these genres and their mythical references in the fictional construction of the dissident sexual identity in the novel El dia que va morir Marilyn characters. At the same time, those fictional identities are compared with the one that Moix constructs about himself in his memoirs, and the identities are related to the historical period in which they are located (the fifties and sixties of the 20th century) and with the bibliography that has been recently published about the subject.
